Mangaluru: Excise police have busted an alleged liquor smuggling racket involving the illegal transportation of liquor from Goa to Kerala via Mangaluru, arresting two persons and seizing 438 litres of Goa liquor.
Two arrested in liquor smuggling case
The arrested accused have been identified as Basavaraju Bovi, the owner and driver of the car, and Nagaveni Nayaka.
Acting on a tip-off about liquor being transported from Goa without a valid permit, a special excise squad intercepted a Swift Dzire car and seized the vehicle along with 438 litres of Goa liquor.
Special team conducts operation
The operation was carried out under the guidance of Mangaluru Division Excise Joint Commissioner Balakrishna C H and the direction of Dakshina Kannada Excise Deputy Commissioner Bindushree.
The special team included Mangaluru Sub-Division Deputy Superintendent Gayathri C H, Bantwal Sub-Division Deputy Superintendent Santhosh Modagi, Bantwal Taluk Zone Excise Inspector Lakshman Shivanagi, Talapady Check-Post Inspector Dattaguru Athani, Sub-Inspectors Jayappa Shivashankar and Abhishek, and constable Prakash.
Investigation underway
A case has been registered by Inspector Sunitha of the Joint Commissioner’s Office.
Further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged transportation of the liquor and identify any other persons who may be involved.
