Mangaluru: Father Muller Medical College organised HAEM INSIGHT 3.0, a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme focusing on the evaluation and management of bleeding disorders. The academic event, jointly conducted by the Departments of Pathology and Pediatrics, was held at the AV Hall of the Father Muller Knowledge Centre and brought together clinicians, pathologists, paediatricians, and medical students for an in-depth discussion on advances in haematology diagnostics.
The programme also marked the unveiling of a new advanced laboratory diagnostic service titled “Comprehensive Bleeding Disorder Evaluation”, aimed at improving early detection and clinical management of complex bleeding disorders.

Focus on strengthening diagnostic capabilities
The programme was presided over by Michael Santhumayor, Administrator of Father Muller Medical College. In his presidential address, he emphasised the crucial role of blood investigations in modern medicine.
He noted that blood serves as a vital diagnostic window into disease processes and that strengthening laboratory diagnostic capabilities is essential for effective clinical decision-making and patient care.
The event was attended by several dignitaries from Father Muller Charitable Institutions including Fr George Jeevan Sequeira, Fr William D’Souza, Fr Rohan Michael Dias, Dr Antony Sylvan D’Souza, and Dr Venkatesh B. M.
Academic leadership for the programme was provided by Dr Nisha J. Marla, Professor and Head of Pathology, and Dr Anil Shetty, Professor and Head of Pediatrics, while Dr Chandana Pai and Dr Chandni Bhandary served as organising secretaries.
Padma Shri awardee shares inspiring address
A key highlight of the programme was a virtual address by Suresh Hanagavadi, an eminent pathologist and recipient of the Padma Shri.
Currently a professor of pathology at JJM Medical College and founder of the Karnataka Hemophilia Society, Dr Hanagavadi shared insights from his decades of work in haematology.
Living with severe **Haemophilia B since childhood, he has transformed his personal experience into a lifelong mission to improve care for patients with bleeding disorders and mentor young pathologists across the country.
New diagnostic panel for bleeding disorders
A major highlight of the programme was the official unveiling of the “Comprehensive Bleeding Disorder Evaluation” test panel by Rev. Fr George Jeevan Sequeira, Administrator of Father Muller Medical College Hospital.
The new diagnostic service is designed to assist clinicians in accurately diagnosing complex haematological conditions and is particularly useful for patients presenting with symptoms such as recurrent nosebleeds, heavy menstrual bleeding, unexplained anaemia, easy bruising, petechiae, prolonged bleeding after minor trauma, or a family history of bleeding disorders.
The test panel also supports evaluation of abnormal coagulation results identified during pre-surgical screening.
Advanced laboratory evaluation
The comprehensive diagnostic panel includes a wide range of specialised laboratory investigations such as:
- Platelet function tests
- Bleeding time assessment
- Clotting time profiling
- Coagulation factor assays
- Evaluation for Von Willebrand disease
- Platelet aggregation studies
- Screening for both inherited and acquired bleeding disorders
These tests enable physicians to accurately identify bleeding disorders and assess surgical risks, allowing for better treatment planning and improved patient outcomes.
Academic discussions and knowledge sharing
During the programme, Dr Chandni Bhandary, Organising Secretary, introduced the newly launched diagnostic services and explained their clinical importance in managing patients with suspected bleeding disorders.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Chandana Pai, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Paediatric Hemato-Oncologist, who acknowledged the contributions of faculty members, organising teams, and participants in making the programme a success.
The session was compered by Sueallen Lorna D’Souza and Joyce Sharal Dsouza, ensuring smooth coordination of the academic proceedings.
The CME concluded with active academic discussions and knowledge exchange, reinforcing Father Muller Medical College’s commitment to advancing medical education, strengthening diagnostic services, and improving patient care through continuous professional learning.
