State Fisheries Minister Mankal Vaidya has assured country boat organizations that their concerns are being taken seriously. During a meeting on Wednesday, he announced that IIT Chennai would conduct a feasibility study to assess the conversion of the Kulai Jetty into an all-season port.
Vaidya admitted the inadequacy of the current project, describing it as outdated and unsuitable for modern needs. “This project, planned 40–50 years ago, fails to address today’s challenges. The NMPA should have consulted fishermen before proceeding. If their concerns can’t be resolved, say so now, or I will act decisively,” he stated.
MLA Dr. Bharat Shetty emphasized that while fishermen support the port’s development, it must accommodate country boats and remain operational year-round. He urged NMPA officials to incorporate fishermen’s suggestions into the project blueprint to prevent future disputes.
MLA Yashpal Suvarna highlighted the importance of proper breakwater construction for the safety of country boat fishermen. He called on the government to prioritize the fishermen’s demands for a safer and more inclusive design.
Dakshina Kannada Fishermen Association president Ashwath Kanchan reiterated the need for an all-season port and adjustments to the breakwater. He warned that continuing the current construction plan would endanger fishermen’s lives and livelihoods.
The feasibility study is expected to provide insights into resolving these pressing concerns.
