The Durgaparameshwari Temple Kateel, steeped in millennia of spiritual legacy, recently witnessed the grand celebration of Jatrotsava, a sacred fair revered by devotees across Dakshina Kannada.
Among the striking rituals was the traditional Agni Kreede or “fire play,” a symbolic battle of devotion between the neighboring villages of Attur and Kodettur. This age-old ceremony is held with great reverence in front of the sanctum of the revered Goddess Kateel, who is believed to favor this ritualistic offering of fire.
Villagers gather in large numbers to take part in this rare event, hurling lit oil lamps at each other in an act of symbolic submission and devotion. Despite the intensity of the ritual, it is widely believed that no harm befalls the true believers who take part, reinforcing faith in the divine protection of the Goddess.
Before the fire ceremony begins, devotees perform a ceremonial bath (or abhisheka) to Sri Devi, followed by special offerings and services at the temple. This entire sequence is believed to please the deity and bring prosperity to the community.
This fiery tradition is exclusively performed during temple fairs and stands as a rare spiritual spectacle that blends culture, faith, and community spirit. Passed down through countless generations, the ritual continues to burn brightly in the hearts of devotees.
