Mangaluru, Dakshina Kannada: A powerful story of dignity and determination is unfolding in Mangaluru, where Ani, a transgender woman originally from Raichur, has turned personal pain into a symbol of empowerment.
Ani, who moved to the coastal city for higher education, discontinued her BA and B.Ed after two semesters, realizing the education field offered limited opportunities for transgender individuals. Despite academic ambitions, she often encountered discrimination and social exclusion, which made survival a daily challenge.
One particularly hurtful experience became the turning point in her life. Repeatedly ignored by auto-rickshaw drivers, Ani struggled to find a ride home. One night, after being denied by every passing rickshaw, she had no option but to walk all the way back. That lonely walk turned into inspiration. She resolved that no one should endure such humiliation again.
With courage and savings, Ani went on to purchase four auto-rickshaws. Today, she rents them out for income but also provides free transportation for elderly transgender people and pregnant women, offering them dignity and mobility—something she was denied.
Ani’s initiative is not just about autos—it’s about reclaiming respect, creating livelihood, and breaking down biases in public spaces. Her journey is now inspiring others in the community to dream beyond limits.
Her story is a testament to resilience, self-reliance, and compassion.
