Bantwal: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds battered parts of Bantwal taluk on Tuesday, causing partial damage to five houses across different villages. Uprooted trees and mudslides crashed onto residential buildings and outbuildings, but no injuries or loss of life were reported.
The incidents were reported from Ammunje, Mudaikodikula, Kanyana, Pudu, and the Bolangadi area of Panemangalore, where the adverse weather left a trail of destruction. Officials said timely evacuation and the absence of occupants in the affected portions helped avert a major tragedy.
Trees and mudslides damage houses
According to preliminary reports, incessant rain coupled with gusty winds uprooted trees in several locations, with some falling directly onto houses. In a few places, rain-triggered mudslides also struck residential properties and adjoining structures, resulting in partial damage.
The affected houses sustained damage to roofs, walls and surrounding outbuildings. While the structural impact varied from location to location, authorities confirmed that none of the incidents resulted in casualties.
Residents in the affected areas experienced anxious moments as the severe weather intensified, prompting local authorities to respond quickly to the incidents.
Revenue officials inspect affected areas
Soon after receiving information about the damage, officials from the Revenue Department and other concerned authorities visited the affected villages to assess the situation.
The officials conducted spot inspections, documented the extent of the damage and initiated the process of evaluating financial losses suffered by the affected families. The assessment will form the basis for providing relief and compensation as per government norms.
Authorities said a detailed report would be prepared after completing the inspection of all affected properties.
Authorities issue rain safety advisory
With the India Meteorological Department forecasting continued heavy rainfall in the region, the district administration has urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly those living in vulnerable locations.
People residing in low-lying areas, near hill slopes, and other locations prone to landslides or flooding have been advised to stay alert and monitor official weather updates.
The administration has also appealed to the public to avoid travelling to hazardous areas unless absolutely necessary and to strictly follow safety instructions issued by the district authorities and the weather department.
Monsoon continues to impact coastal Karnataka
Heavy monsoon showers have been affecting several parts of Dakshina Kannada in recent days, leading to waterlogging, fallen trees and minor landslides in isolated areas. Strong winds accompanying the rainfall have also increased the risk of damage to houses, electric poles and roadside trees.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation across Bantwal taluk and have assured that emergency response teams are prepared to respond promptly if rainfall intensifies further.
Residents have been advised to report any incidents of landslides, fallen trees, flooding or damage to property to the local authorities without delay. As the monsoon remains active, officials have reiterated the importance of exercising caution and adhering to all precautionary measures to minimise risks to life and property.
