Udupi/Mangaluru: Heavy rain intensified across Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on Wednesday, with several areas receiving strong showers that led to water flowing onto roads, disrupted vehicular movement and caused power supply interruptions.
Rain began in several parts of Udupi district during the morning and continued through the day. While moderate showers were reported initially, rainfall intensified after noon in several areas, bringing relief from the recent dry spells but also creating temporary difficulties for commuters.
Heavy showers across Udupi district
Udupi city, Manipal, Hiriyadka, Alevoor, Malpe and Udyavar received good rainfall during the day. Several parts of Kundapur, Byndoor, Brahmavar, Kaup, Hebri and Karkala taluks also experienced substantial showers.
Rainwater was seen flowing onto roads in some locations, affecting vehicular movement. The combination of heavy showers and surface water accumulation made travel difficult on certain stretches.
Several areas had also received good rainfall on Tuesday night. The continued showers have resulted in increased water flow in low-lying areas and created challenges for residents in some parts of the district.
Strong winds damage power lines
Strong winds accompanying Wednesday’s rain damaged electricity lines at several locations across Udupi district, resulting in disruptions to power supply.
Parts of Eshwaranagar in Manipal were among the areas affected. In some locations, the power supply reportedly tripped shortly after being restored because of continuing problems with the electricity lines.
MESCOM personnel were working to identify and rectify the faults and restore a stable power supply to the affected areas.
Power interruptions during heavy rain and strong winds are not uncommon, as falling branches, damaged lines and other weather-related issues can affect electricity infrastructure. Maintenance teams have been attending to complaints and working on restoration wherever faults were reported.
Cattle shed partially damaged in Byndoor
The impact of the rain was also reported in Byndoor taluk. A cattle shed belonging to Parvathi Shetty of Navunda village was partially damaged following the rainfall received on Tuesday night.
The incident was among the local effects reported as rain continued across the district. No further major damage was reported in the information available.
The continued rainfall has also prompted residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas to remain cautious, particularly during periods of intense showers and strong winds.
Dakshina Kannada receives widespread rain
Dakshina Kannada district also experienced widespread rainfall on Wednesday.
In Mangaluru city, rain began during the early morning and continued heavily until around 10 am. The intensity reduced for a brief period after that, but intermittent showers were reported later.
Other parts of the district, including Sullia, Bantwal, Beltangady, Kadaba, Puttur, Mulki and Moodbidri, also received intermittent rainfall during the day.
The widespread showers have added to the rainfall activity across coastal Karnataka, with several parts of the region continuing to experience changing weather conditions.
Yellow alert issued for August 20
According to the India Meteorological Department forecast, a yellow alert has been issued for August 20, with good rainfall expected.
The alert indicates the possibility of continued rain across the region, and residents are advised to remain cautious during periods of intense rainfall and strong winds.
Commuters may also face temporary disruptions in areas where rainwater accumulates on roads. Electricity consumers in areas affected by damaged lines may experience interruptions until repair work is completed.
With both Udupi and Dakshina Kannada receiving widespread rain, the coming days will remain important for monitoring water levels, road conditions and weather-related disruptions. Authorities and utility teams are expected to continue monitoring vulnerable locations and attend to complaints arising from the rainfall.
