Hill Subsidence and Rain Damage Wreak Havoc in Mangalore

Mangalore

Mangalore continues to suffer the adverse effects of heavy rains, with hill subsidence causing troubles in various areas. The situation has led to concerning incidents, including a barrier collapse in Bajal Pallakere during construction for a layout on Sunday.

As the barrier came down suddenly, a rented house adjacent to it was severely damaged. Fortunately, despite this sudden calamity, three residents, including a child, narrowly escaped harm by quickly vacating the house upon hearing the sound of collapse. Radhakrishna, who owns the affected property, said, “The bedroom and the bathroom are completely gutted.”

The partial fall of this barrier has raised concerns among neighboring houses as well. Anticipating further risks due to rainfall and potential damage caused by nearby construction activities, both Radhakrishna’s family and their tenants have been relocated as a precautionary measure.

The ongoing construction work in Bajal Pallakere has come under scrutiny following these incidents. Over three years have passed since leveling began for barang development by a real estate businessman; however, consistent issues persist with inadequate infrastructure planning and safety measures. The lack of proper rainwater flow management from this site significantly exacerbates these problems.

Moreover, locals have highlighted that complaints regarding these issues were previously reported to the District Collector’s office but remained unaddressed.

In another part of Mangalore, at Vidyanagar Kalde in Panjimogaru ward near corporation jurisdiction, four houses are at risk due to potential landslides triggered by heavy rains. Consequently, authorities were compelled to evacuate families from Mary Varghese’s residence, along with Gauri Bhaskarsiva Naik’s home and Chandra Naik’s residence, to the Panjimogaru Government School building temporarily until conditions improve sufficiently.

These recent events underscore an urgent need for effective solutions addressing infrastructure deficiencies across Mangalore amid inclement weather conditions.
