Mangaluru: Coastal Karnataka, particularly Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, is expected to receive widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over the coming days as the northeast monsoon intensifies, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The forecast indicates rainfall across coastal districts and parts of Malnad and South Interior Karnataka on October 22 and 23. The IMD has issued a specific warning for heavy rainfall in Dakshina Kannada on October 24, while Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Kodagu are also expected to receive heavy showers.

The weather system is likely to bring rain to Bengaluru and several other parts of South Interior Karnataka before the intensity gradually decreases towards October 25 and 26.

Rain and thunderstorms forecast for October 22 and 23

Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are expected to experience widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms on October 22 and 23. Most parts of South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru, are also forecast to receive good rainfall during this period.

The Malnad districts of Kodagu, Hassan and Chikkamagaluru, along with Mysuru, are expected to continue receiving heavy showers.

Meanwhile, light rainfall is likely in parts of North Interior Karnataka, including Belagavi, Dharwad and Haveri districts.

The forecast suggests that the next two days could bring unsettled weather across several regions of the state, with coastal areas and the southern interior likely to experience thunderstorms.

Heavy rainfall warning for Dakshina Kannada on October 24

The IMD has specifically warned of heavy rainfall in Dakshina Kannada on October 24.

Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Kodagu are also expected to receive heavy showers on the day, while other parts of Karnataka may experience moderate rainfall.

Residents in coastal districts are advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions, particularly during periods of intense rain and thunderstorms.

Heavy rainfall can also affect road travel and daily activities. Residents should follow official weather updates and local advisories, especially if conditions deteriorate.

Rainfall likely to decrease by October 25 and 26

The intensity of rainfall is expected to gradually decline by October 25 and 26.

Light showers may occur in isolated locations across coastal Karnataka and the southern interior regions, while largely dry weather is forecast to prevail across the remaining parts of the state.

The expected reduction in rainfall could bring some relief after several days of unsettled weather. However, localised showers may continue in areas covered by the forecast.

IMD advises caution during thunderstorms

With lightning and thunderstorms expected in several districts, the IMD has urged the public and farmers to take necessary precautions.

People have been advised to avoid standing under trees during thunderstorms, as trees can pose a serious risk during lightning strikes. Residents should seek shelter in a safe building when thunderstorm activity begins and avoid exposed locations.

Farmers and people working outdoors should pay particular attention to weather alerts and suspend outdoor activities during lightning and heavy rain.

Residents of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and the Malnad districts should monitor official IMD bulletins for updated forecasts and any further warnings.
