Mangaluru: As part of the vibrant Karavali Utsava celebrations, the coastal city of Mangaluru is all set to host the 9th edition of the International Kite Festival at Tannirbhavi Blue Bay Beach on January 17 and 18, 2026. The two-day festival, scheduled to begin daily at 3 pm, promises a spectacular display of colours, creativity and culture, with the participation of renowned kite flyers from India and across the world.

The festival venue, Tannirbhavi Blue Bay Beach, is expected to transform into a lively hub of activity as the skies come alive with a diverse range of kites, drawing residents, tourists and kite enthusiasts in large numbers.

Strong international participation

Speaking at a welcoming programme organised at the Deputy Commissioner’s office hall on Friday, Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. said that 30 international kite flyers from 15 different countries have already arrived in the city to take part in the festival. In total, 62 skilled kite flyers from India and abroad will participate, showcasing their expertise and unique styles during the event.

According to the Deputy Commissioner, the international presence has been steadily growing with each edition, reinforcing Mangaluru’s reputation as an important destination on the global kite-flying calendar. He added that the festival not only entertains the public but also promotes cultural exchange and tourism in the coastal region.

Wide variety of kites on display

The International Kite Festival will feature an impressive range of kites, appealing to audiences of all ages. Darshan H.V. said the event will showcase traditional kites alongside modern and technically advanced designs such as aerofoil kites, inflatable kites and quad-line sport kites.

These kites, known for their complex manoeuvres and synchronised flying patterns, are expected to be a major attraction, especially for young spectators and photography enthusiasts. The organisers have ensured that the flying sessions are well-coordinated to allow visitors to witness different kite forms throughout the festival hours.

New ‘Ratha’ kite to reflect Tulunadu culture

A key highlight of this year’s festival will be the introduction of a specially designed cultural kite named “Ratha”. The new kite has been conceptualised to reflect the rich cultural heritage of Tulunadu, blending traditional motifs with innovative kite design.

Team Mangaluru, the organising body of the festival, said the Ratha kite symbolises the region’s history, rituals and artistic traditions. Along with the Ratha, several other cultural kites inspired by local and Indian themes will also be flown, adding a distinct regional flavour to the international event.

Extensive arrangements for visitors

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Vinayak Narwade said elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure smooth access and convenience for visitors. Parking facilities have been created for around 1,900 cars at 10 designated locations and for two-wheelers at four locations within a 2-km radius of Tannirbhavi Beach.

To ease traffic congestion and encourage public transport, visitors can also reach the venue by availing ferry services across the Phalguni river from Sultan Battery. Additionally, bus pick-up and drop services will operate from KIOCL Circle to Blue Bay Beach throughout the festival duration.

The district administration has coordinated with various departments to ensure safety, crowd management and cleanliness at the beach, keeping in mind the large turnout expected over the weekend.

Team Mangaluru’s role and sponsorship support

Established in 1995, Team Mangaluru has been playing a pivotal role in promoting kite flying as an art form rather than just a recreational activity. Over the years, the team has organised multiple national and international events, helping put Mangaluru on the global kite-flying map.

Team members Pran, Prashanth, Dinesh Holla and others said the festival is being organised with sponsorship support from MRPL, ONGC and several private organisations, along with active backing from the district administration. They expressed confidence that the event would provide wholesome entertainment while also boosting local tourism and the coastal economy.

A celebration beyond the skies

Beyond the visual spectacle of kites, the International Kite Festival is also seen as a celebration of community spirit and cultural diversity. Families, students and tourists are expected to gather at the beach to enjoy the festive atmosphere, sea breeze and artistic displays in the sky.

With favourable weather conditions forecast and meticulous planning in place, the organisers believe the 9th edition of the festival will be one of the most memorable so far. As Mangaluru celebrates Karavali Utsava, the International Kite Festival is poised to remain a major highlight, reinforcing the city’s cultural vibrancy and global outlook.
