Mangaluru: The Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Mangaluru, organised “Hear-Walk 2026” in observance of World Hearing Day 2026, in collaboration with the Dakshina Kannada Speech and Hearing Association. The city-wide walkathon aimed to raise awareness about ear and hearing care, especially among children.

The initiative brought together students, faculty members, healthcare professionals and private practitioners in a united effort to promote early detection and timely intervention in hearing health.

Strong inter-institutional participation

The walkathon witnessed active participation from Nitte Institute of Speech and Hearing, Dr. M.V. Shetty College of Speech and Hearing, A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences, Father Muller College of Speech and Hearing and Yenepoya Medical College, reflecting a collective commitment towards hearing health awareness.

World Hearing Day, an initiative of the World Health Organization, carries this year’s theme: “From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children.” The theme highlights the importance of integrating hearing care initiatives into community and educational settings to ensure universal access.

Inauguration and key addresses

The programme began with a welcome address by Dr Kauslendra Kumar, Head of the Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, KMC Mangaluru, who emphasised the role of community-driven initiatives in ensuring accessible hearing care.

The walkathon was flagged off by Mr Mithun HN, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Mangaluru, who attended as Chief Guest. He encouraged students to become ambassadors of hearing health awareness and to contribute actively to public health initiatives.

Associate Dean Dr Sheetal Ullal also addressed the gathering, reiterating the institution’s commitment to strengthening community engagement in healthcare awareness programmes.

Creative awareness and valedictory

The closing ceremony was held at the City Town Hall, where students presented street plays and flash mobs conveying powerful messages on ear and hearing care. Their performances focused on early identification of hearing loss and the importance of timely intervention.

Dr Shivaprakash, District Medical Officer, Wenlock Hospital, graced the valedictory function as Chief Guest and emphasised that early diagnosis can significantly improve speech, language and overall developmental outcomes in children.

In his concluding remarks, Dr Rohit Ravi thanked volunteers, dignitaries, sponsors and participants for their wholehearted support. He reaffirmed the need for sustained public engagement to achieve the goal of hearing care for all children.

The event received support from the World Health Organization, the Indian Speech-Language and Hearing Association, Speranza Clinic and TMC Hearing Care Clinic.

Hear-Walk 2026 stood as a strong example of inter-institutional collaboration and collective action towards ensuring accessible and quality hearing care for every child.
