Mangaluru: Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, in association with KMC Hospital Attavar, is set to organise the KMC Cancer Conclave 2026, a two-day national academic conference focusing on gastrointestinal cancers, on January 31 and February 1, 2026. The conclave will be held at the KMC Marena Sports and Indoor Complex, Attavar, and forms a major part of the institution’s World Cancer Day 2026 initiatives.

The conference underlines KMC’s sustained commitment to advancing cancer care through multidisciplinary collaboration, academic excellence, and community engagement.

Advancing gastrointestinal cancer care

Addressing the media, Dr B. Unnikrishnan, Dean, Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, stated that the conclave reflects the institution’s focus on strengthening evidence-based oncology practice through knowledge exchange and inter-specialty coordination. He highlighted the legacy of the Oncology Centre at KMC Hospital, Attavar, which was the first cancer unit in Mangaluru city, established in 1992.

Over the years, the centre has evolved into a comprehensive oncology facility offering Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology, Cancer Diagnostics and Screening, and Palliative Care. The services are supported by a highly trained allied healthcare team committed to compassionate and patient-centric cancer care.

Dr Unnikrishnan further noted that the department is equipped with a state-of-the-art TrueBeam Linear Accelerator, enabling advanced radiation techniques such as stereotactic radiotherapy and four-dimensional motion management–based radiation therapy. Patients from Government Wenlock Hospital are also treated using these advanced systems, ensuring wider access to quality cancer treatment for the region.

Theme and academic focus

The conclave is being organised under the leadership of Dr M. S. Athiyamaan, Organising Chairman, along with Dr Dishitha Shetty and Dr Abhishek Krishna, Organising Secretaries. They stated that the central theme of the conference — “Bridging Together Disciplines for Better Gastrointestinal Cancer Outcomes” — highlights the importance of coordinated, multidisciplinary approaches in improving patient outcomes.

The scientific programme will bring together eminent medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, general surgeons, gastroenterologists, pathologists, radiologists, and allied specialists from across the country. The programme includes expert lectures, panel discussions, and case-based deliberations aimed at strengthening clinical decision-making and best practices in gastrointestinal oncology.

With over 300 registrations already recorded, the conclave is expected to emerge as a significant academic platform for collaboration, learning, and professional networking.

Inaugural ceremony

The inaugural function of the KMC Cancer Conclave 2026 will be held on January 31, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the same venue. Dr Anand Venugopal, Chief Operating Officer, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal, will be the Chief Guest, while Dr Dilip G.
