Mangaluru: Train services on the Mangaluru–Bengaluru route remained severely affected on Sunday after a landslide blocked the railway track between Yedakumari and Shrivagilu stations on Saturday night. South Western Railway has cancelled key passenger services and partially cancelled several others as restoration work continues amid persistent heavy rainfall.

Restoration work underway

A relief material train has reached the affected location to assist restoration efforts, while railway engineers and maintenance teams have been deployed to clear the debris and restore the damaged track.

According to Manjunath Kanamadi, Chief Public Relations Officer of South Western Railway, Hubballi, additional earthmovers and resources have been pressed into service to speed up restoration work.

He said railway officials are continuously monitoring the situation and coordinating restoration activities to ensure train services can resume safely.

Heavy rain hampers restoration

Railway authorities said restoration is expected to take longer than initially anticipated as continuous heavy rainfall has triggered repeated landslides in the affected stretch.

The railway line between Yedakumari and Shrivagilu passes through the Western Ghats, an area prone to landslips during the monsoon. Fresh debris and unstable slopes have slowed restoration work despite the deployment of additional machinery.

Officials have urged passengers to check the latest train status before commencing their journey.

Trains cancelled

Following the landslide, South Western Railway cancelled the following services on Sunday:

  • Train No. 16540 Mangaluru Junction – Yeshwantpur Express
  • Train No. 16575 Yeshwantpur – Mangaluru Junction Express

Passengers holding confirmed tickets have been advised to seek updated travel information through official railway channels.

Several trains partially cancelled

In addition to the complete cancellations, several long-distance trains were short-terminated and partially cancelled due to the blocked railway section.

The affected services include:

  • Train No. 16585 SMVT Bengaluru – Murudeshwar Express: Short-terminated at Hassan and partially cancelled between Hassan and Murudeshwar.
  • Train No. 16511 KSR Bengaluru – Kozhikode Express: Short-terminated at Hassan and partially cancelled between Hassan and Kozhikode.
  • Train No. 17377 Vijayapura – Mangaluru Central Express: Short-terminated at Hassan and partially cancelled between Hassan and Mangaluru Central.
  • Train No. 16595 KSR Bengaluru – Karwar Express: Short-terminated at Sakleshpur and partially cancelled between Sakleshpur and Karwar.
  • Train No. 16586 Murudeshwar – SMVT Bengaluru Express: Short-terminated at Subrahmanya Road and partially cancelled between Subrahmanya Road and SMVT Bengaluru.
  • Train No. 16512 Kozhikode – KSR Bengaluru Express: Short-terminated at Kabaka Puttur and partially cancelled between Kabaka Puttur and KSR Bengaluru.
  • Train No. 17378 Mangaluru Central – Vijayapura Express: Short-terminated at Subrahmanya Road and partially cancelled between Subrahmanya Road and Vijayapura.

Passengers advised to monitor updates

Railway officials have appealed to passengers travelling on the affected routes to verify the status of their trains before leaving for railway stations, as restoration work is still in progress.

With heavy rainfall continuing across the Western Ghats, authorities are closely monitoring the vulnerable railway section and are working to restore normal train operations at the earliest while ensuring passenger safety.
