A massive landslide on Sunday along the Shirady Ghat stretch of NH-75 in Sakaleshpur taluk, Hassan district, disrupted vehicular movement between Mangaluru and Bengaluru. Nonstop showers over the weekend triggered the collapse, leading to heavy traffic jams near the Hassan–Dakshina Kannada border. With weekend rush peaking, the situation escalated, forcing the police to install barricades and reroute vehicles via alternative paths.
In Mangaluru city, torrential rains swamped the area beneath the Pumpwell flyover, leaving drivers struggling through knee-deep water. In another incident, a towering tree toppled onto a home in Barebailu around 7 p.m. Saturday, severely damaging the structure—fortunately, there were no casualties.
Elsewhere, a minor landslip at Parladka junction briefly stalled traffic along the Darbe–Manjalpady stretch. Swift action by local authorities ensured the road was cleared using earthmoving machinery. In Puttur town, the collapse of a compound wall led to damage to two parked autorickshaws.
Reports from the District Disaster Management Authority confirmed partial damage to seven homes over the past 24 hours. Additionally, strong winds and heavy rains knocked down 237 electricity poles and damaged two power transformers, leading to disruptions.
Rising water levels in regional dams and rivers added to the concern. AMR Dam hit its full reservoir capacity at 18.9 metres, while Thumbe Dam neared its brim at 5.5 metres. Deputy Commissioner in-charge Dr. K Anand urged officials to stay alert and ensure rapid disaster response with the arrival of NDRF and SDRF teams.
