Beltangady: Dharmasthala police have arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly attempting to kill a 43-year-old man by deliberately ramming a Tata Sumo into his two-wheeler at Kurumani Cross in Dharmasthala village.
The accused, identified as Sharath, 33, a resident of Dharmasthala, was arrested on August 22 and subsequently produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
According to the complaint filed by Balakrishna, 43, a resident of Kalmane in Beltangady, the accused had allegedly threatened him a few months ago. Sharath reportedly warned Balakrishna that he would kill him by hitting him with a vehicle.
Incident occurred while victim was returning home
The alleged attack took place on the evening of July 30, when Balakrishna was returning home on his two-wheeler after completing his work for the day.
According to the complaint, Sharath allegedly followed him in a Tata Sumo bearing registration number KA-05-AD-6341.
When Balakrishna reached Kurumani Cross, the accused allegedly rammed the vehicle into his two-wheeler with the intention of causing his death.
The collision left Balakrishna injured. He was subsequently shifted to a hospital, where he received inpatient treatment for the injuries sustained in the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged collision are now being investigated by the Dharmasthala police.
Police register case under BNS
Following Balakrishna’s complaint, Dharmasthala police registered a case under Crime No. 52/2026.
The case has been registered under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, relating to an attempt to cause death.
Police initiated an investigation into the allegations and subsequently arrested Sharath on August 22.
The accused was produced before the court following his arrest and was remanded to judicial custody.
Investigation underway
The police investigation is expected to focus on the circumstances leading to the alleged attack, the earlier threat reportedly issued to Balakrishna and the events surrounding the collision at Kurumani Cross.
The complaint alleges that the vehicle was deliberately used to ram the two-wheeler, raising the question of whether the collision was a planned attempt to cause serious harm.
