Mangaluru: A goods autorickshaw driver was killed after his vehicle collided with a car driven by a judicial officer near the district court complex in Mangaluru on Tuesday morning. The judicial officer and a scooter rider also sustained injuries in the accident.
The incident occurred at around 10 am in the Karangalpady area, near Radha Medicals and Court Road. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the collision.
Goods autorickshaw collides with judge’s car
According to the police complaint reported by the Times of India, the judicial officer was travelling towards the district court complex when the goods autorickshaw approached from the court side.
The autorickshaw allegedly lost control, crossed towards the right side of the road and collided with the front-right portion of the car. The force of the collision caused the goods vehicle to overturn. It then struck a scooter, causing the rider to fall on the road.
The exact sequence of events and the reason why the autorickshaw crossed the road are part of the police investigation. The complaint reportedly described the autorickshaw as being driven at high speed and in a rash and negligent manner; this remains an allegation recorded in the complaint and is not a finding of guilt.
Driver dies after sustaining critical injuries
The goods autorickshaw driver was identified as Chandra K., a resident of Kasaragod in Kerala. Reports have given his age as 67 and 69, so the exact age should be treated cautiously until confirmed by the police or his family. He sustained serious injuries when the autorickshaw overturned in the collision.
He was taken to hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries. One local report stated that he died around noon after being shifted for medical attention.
Chandra was reportedly driving a goods autorickshaw associated with Kalpana Sweets in Mangaluru. His death has turned the morning road accident into a fatal case being investigated by the traffic police.
Judicial officer and scooter rider injured
The car involved in the accident was being driven by First Additional District and Sessions Judge D. Vinay, according to reports. He sustained minor injuries in the collision, including an injury to his hand, and was reported to be out of danger.
The overturned goods autorickshaw also hit a nearby scooter. The scooter rider, identified in one report as Plevier, 51, fell onto the road and sustained injuries.
The car, goods autorickshaw and scooter were damaged in the accident. Traffic police reached the spot and conducted an inspection as part of the investigation.
CCTV footage being examined
The accident was reportedly captured on CCTV cameras in the area. A local report said the footage showed the goods autorickshaw travelling towards the car before the collision.
Police are examining the circumstances visible in the footage as part of their inquiry. Some reports quoted police as considering whether the driver could have experienced blurred vision or another medical or physical problem before losing control of the vehicle.
Such possibilities have not been established as the cause of the accident. The investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events and determine the circumstances that led to the collision.
Police register case
The Traffic East police have registered a case in connection with the accident. According to the Times of India, the case was registered under Sections 281, 125(a) and 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The sections relate to allegations concerning dangerous or negligent driving and injuries caused in a road accident. The registration of the case allows police to investigate the incident, examine available evidence and determine responsibility based on the findings.
Police are also expected to consider statements from those involved, CCTV footage and other evidence gathered from the accident site.
Accident raises road-safety concerns
The accident occurred on a busy stretch near the district court complex, where vehicles, two-wheelers and pedestrians frequently move through the area.
The collision also demonstrates how a single vehicle losing control can involve multiple road users. In this case, the goods autorickshaw collided with the judge’s car before overturning and hitting a scooter.
As the investigation continues, the police will establish the precise circumstances behind the fatal collision. The injuries suffered by the judicial officer and scooter rider were reported to be less serious, while the autorickshaw driver’s death remains the major consequence of the accident.
Conclusion
The fatal accident near Mangaluru’s district court complex claimed the life of goods autorickshaw driver Chandra K. and left First Additional District and Sessions Judge D. Vinay and a scooter rider injured. Police have registered a case and are investigating the collision, including CCTV footage and other available evidence.
