Mangaluru Councillors Demand Speedy Implementation Of Led Street Light Project

MANGALURU (PTI): Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) councillors, from all political parties, have called for a fair, transparent, and expedited implementation of the LED street light system under the ongoing smart city project. The council meeting on Thursday was marked by uproar over this issue, with heated exchanges between members.

Opposition member Vinayraj of Court Ward (Congress) raised the issue, stating, “The smart city project has been ongoing for five years, and by now, the LED street light component should have been completed by the MCC. Meanwhile, three companies, including Crompton, have been kept on tenterhooks by the MCC. What is causing the delay and why? The City Corporation has been kept in the dark about this.”

Vinayraj accused the Corporation of potentially deceiving the people of Mangaluru by delaying the project and withholding information. He also criticized Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur for being ineffective in managing officials.

In response, ruling BJP members stood up and shouted against Vinayraj and other Congress councillors. Mayor Shetty countered by alleging that the Congress-ruled state government was responsible for erratic transfers of MCC officials, reducing the workforce to 30%. “We do not have dedicated staff for the management of the electrical system in the city,” he added.

A senior MCC official noted that the Corporation would save at least 50% in power consumption if all 65,000 street light points in the city were converted to LED lamps. He mentioned that 12,000 LED lights have already been purchased, and Fiza-Forum Enterprises has placed orders for an additional 50,000 units. If all processes are completed, the entire city could be illuminated with LED lamps by November.
