Mangaluru Court Acquits Man Accused Of Rape And Cheating In 2019 Case

The 6th Additional District and Sessions Court in Mangaluru has recently acquitted Umesh Salian, who had been facing serious charges of rape and cheating. The case stemmed from an incident in 2019 when a woman accused Salian, who was a bus driver, of taking advantage of her trust. According to the complainant, Salian initially introduced himself and subsequently borrowed Rs 1 lakh from her under the pretext of returning it later. However, she claimed that he not only failed to repay the money but also allegedly raped her multiple times, which resulted in her becoming pregnant. Furthermore, the woman alleged that Salian had promised to marry her but ultimately refused.

The Bajpe police had registered a case against Salian following the complaint and later filed a detailed chargesheet to prosecute him. Despite the serious allegations, the court proceedings took a turn on August 29, 2024, when Judge Kantharaju S.V. delivered a verdict in favor of the accused, leading to his acquittal from all charges.

The defense team, led by well-known advocates B. Arun Bangera and Rihana Parveen, played a crucial role in securing Salian’s acquittal. They meticulously argued the case, challenging the evidence and testimonies presented by the prosecution. Their efforts ultimately resulted in the court ruling that there wasn’t sufficient proof to convict Salian on the charges levied against him.
