Mangaluru: Police arrested a 41-year-old man at Mangaluru International Airport after he allegedly remained absconding for two years in connection with a case registered at Kankanady Town Police Station.

The accused has been identified as Kiran Coelho, 41, a resident of Shediguri in Urwa Ashoknagar. Police said he had secured bail from a court but subsequently failed to appear for court proceedings for the past two years and also evaded arrest.

Court issues arrest warrant

According to police, Kiran had been accused in a case registered at Kankanady Town Police Station. After obtaining bail, he allegedly stopped appearing before the court for further proceedings.

Following his continued absence, the 3rd JMFC Court issued a warrant for his arrest.

Police said the accused had changed his address and gone into hiding. Investigators subsequently received information that he had travelled abroad and was staying away from the country to avoid arrest.

The police then took steps to track his movements and ensure that he could be apprehended if he returned to India.

Look-Out Circular issued

Based on information that Kiran had travelled abroad, police issued a Look-Out Circular (LOC) using his passport details.

An LOC is used by law-enforcement authorities to alert immigration and other agencies about a person whose movements need to be monitored, particularly when the person is wanted in connection with a criminal case or court proceedings.

The circular proved significant when Kiran returned to Mangaluru.

Police had access to his passport details and were able to identify him when he arrived at the airport.

Arrest at Mangaluru International Airport

Kiran arrived at Mangaluru International Airport on August 31, where police arrested him.

The arrest brought an end to his two-year period of evasion, according to the police.

The case now moves forward through the legal process, with the accused required to face the proceedings connected to the original case registered at Kankanady Town Police Station.

Police have not disclosed further details about the nature of the original case in the report.

Two-year absence ends with airport arrest

The arrest highlights how Look-Out Circulars can help authorities trace accused persons who leave their usual place of residence or travel abroad while avoiding court proceedings.

In this case, police said Kiran had changed his address and gone into hiding before information emerged that he had travelled overseas. The subsequent LOC issued using his passport details enabled authorities to track him when he returned to Mangaluru.

The accused’s failure to appear before court for two years had resulted in the issuance of the arrest warrant. His return to Mangaluru ultimately allowed police to execute the warrant and take him into custody.
