Mangaluru: A 40-year-old man from Karkala in Udupi district has tested positive for Monkeypox (Mpox), the health department confirmed on Thursday. The National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, verified the case on January 22.
The patient, who has been living in Dubai for the past 19 years, returned to Mangaluru on January 17. He developed fever symptoms two days before his arrival and later noticed rashes. Following this, he was immediately admitted to a private hospital, where he was isolated. Samples were sent to Bangalore Medical College (BMC) and then forwarded to NIV Pune for conclusive testing.
The health department stated that the patient is in stable condition and has shown no severe symptoms. He is likely to be discharged soon. Meanwhile, his 36-year-old wife, who received him at the airport, has been identified as his primary contact. She has been advised to isolate herself and monitor for any potential signs of infection over the next few days.
Officials have assured the public there is no cause for alarm, emphasizing that Monkeypox is less infectious and usually milder than many other viral diseases. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further transmission.
