Mangaluru: Street vendors, excluding food sellers, will begin operations at the newly designated vending zone near the Indira Canteen in the State Bank area from Wednesday, announced Mayor Manoj Kumar. Following an inspection of the vending zone developed by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) in Cantonment ward, the mayor shared that 93 out of 130 identified vendors have already received ID cards to commence their businesses.
However, food vendors are facing a delay due to pending water supply arrangements. Flower vendors are expected to join next week, once the area designated for them is levelled. The mayor emphasized that vendors selling vegetables, fancy items, and other goods will start operations on Wednesday.
In response to concerns about destitute persons using the vending zone at night, the mayor confirmed that a gate will be installed to restrict entry. Cantonment ward corporator Diwakar noted that work on facilities, such as interlocking tiles in front of the vending zone, is still ongoing. He highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness in the new space and stressed that the initiative aims to provide a more organized environment for street vendors.
