Mangaluru: In a welcome development, the Thumbe dam, managed by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), has reached full capacity thanks to widespread pre-monsoon showers across Dakshina Kannada. Officials confirmed the dam now holds 10.5 million cubic meters (MCM) of water — enough to sustain the city’s water needs for 40 days without any additional rainfall.
As of Saturday, the water level stood at 5.9 meters, just shy of the dam’s full capacity of 6 meters. Given the steady inflow from rainfall in the Nethravati River catchment areas, officials are confident that levels will remain stable, with little chance of depletion in the coming days.
The AMR dam, located upstream, has also witnessed a substantial increase in storage. Currently, it holds 18.9 meters of water — the maximum storage level — compared to 16.5 meters recorded on April 19, 2024. This additional reserve provides a backup for the Thumbe dam and can be used to release water downstream if needed.
In case of emergency, Harekala dam, located downstream of Thumbe, is another alternate water source MCC can utilize. MCC’s Executive Engineer Naresh Shenoy reassured citizens that there’s no need to worry about summer water shortages, stating that current reserves are adequate until June 10.
This seasonal rainfall has offered a timely buffer against dry summer conditions, reinforcing the city’s preparedness for the coming weeks.
