Mangaluru: Founded by her sons, Mr. Jayaram Muliya and Mr. Mahesh Bhat Muliya, in memory of the renowned Kannada writer known for her women’s advocacy, Smt. Manorama M. Bhat, this endowment awards female students who score the highest marks in Kannada language in PUC and choose Kannada Literature as a major in their B.A. degree. This award presentation has been taking place for the past two years.
This endowment fund was established with the noble intention that Smt. Manorama M. Bhat’s passion for literature and progressive thought continue to inspire the next generation of women through literary study. The endowment carries a total value of ₹60,000 over three years, awarded at ₹20,000 per year.
The Department of Kannada at St. Aloysius Deemed-to-be University has a rich 146-year history. Smt. Manorama M. Bhat’s father-in-law, Mr. Muliya Thimmappayya, served as a professor here and helped build the department.
For this year, the eligibility for the Manorama M. Bhat Memorial Award has been earned by first-year B.A. students of St. Aloysius Deemed-to-be University, Mangaluru: Ms. Varshini from Sakleshpur and Ms. Sudheeksha from Kundapura.
The selection committee comprised Mr. Mahesh M. Bhat (co-founder of the award endowment), Dr. Dinesh Nayak (Head of the Kannada Department), and senior Kannada professors Dr. Narasimha Murthy, Dr. Vishwanatha Badikana, and Dr. Mahalinga Bhat.
