Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has intensified its drive against food safety violations, seizing Ajinomoto (monosodium glutamate or MSG) from street food vendors near the KSRTC bus stand at Bejai and penalising others for using banned food colours.
The inspections were carried out by the MCC’s Health Section as part of an initiative to ensure food hygiene and safeguard public health.
Ajinomoto seized during inspection
During the inspection at street food stalls near the Bejai KSRTC bus stand, health officials found vendors using Ajinomoto, which they said was being used in violation of food safety regulations. The substance was seized from the vendors.
Civic authorities reminded all food vendors to strictly comply with prescribed food hygiene and safety standards, warning that violations would invite stringent legal action.
Three stalls fined for banned food colours
In a separate surprise inspection at the State Bank area of Mangaluru, health officials found three street food vendors using banned food colours in the preparation of food.
The MCC imposed a total fine of ₹6,000 on the three stalls for violating food safety norms.
Officials also cautioned the vendors that any repeat offence would result in stricter legal action.
MCC urges strict compliance
The corporation said the inspections are part of its ongoing efforts to ensure safe and hygienic food for the public. Authorities urged street food vendors to follow all food safety regulations and avoid the use of prohibited substances that could pose health risks to consumers.
The MCC said such inspections will continue across the city to improve food safety standards and protect public health.
