The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is set to appoint a consultant for a comprehensive 3D digital twin drone survey in the city. This initiative aims to create a detailed databank to support the revenue, engineering, health, town planning, and other departments within the MCC. The Geographic Information System (GIS)-based decision support system (DSS) will improve basic facilities, enhance residents’ quality of life, and boost the city’s revenue.
Premanand Shetty, the chief whip of the MCC council, emphasized that implementing the GIS-based DSS will increase transparency and efficiency in administration. “It will help in presenting a better administration with the participation of all departments. The survey aims to prepare a 3D base map of the city and its surrounding regions, enhancing revenue and coordination among departments while ensuring effective disaster management,” Shetty stated. The proposal has been referred to the MCC standing committee on finance for further discussion and a detailed report. Once finalized, the agenda will be discussed in the next council meeting.
The survey will also facilitate the creation of a web-based application featuring a 3D reality mesh model, aiding property tax collection, flood monitoring, and land use management. Additionally, the scope includes data accumulation through a mobile mapping system based on Lidar and 360-degree street panoramic imaging. A similar drone survey by the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) covered 16 wards in 2022.
Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur added that the survey will provide a comprehensive 3D representation of the city. “A decision to commence the survey will be taken as soon as possible,” he said.
