Mangaluru: In response to the recent vandalism at ‘Colors,’ a unisex salon near the KSRTC Bus Stand in Bejai, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a city-wide inspection of salons, beauty parlours, and massage centres. Mayor Manoj Kumar stated that a dedicated team of MCC officials will verify licences and conduct spot inspections to ensure compliance with regulations.
The initiative comes after the arrest of 14 individuals, including Rama Sena founder Prasad Attavar, in connection with the vandalism. Mayor Kumar emphasized that while most such establishments have obtained trade licences, the MCC is responsible for verifying their validity and adherence to stipulated conditions. “Officials will check documents and ensure the premises are used as per the licensed purpose. Violations, if any, will be addressed appropriately,” the Mayor stated.
He clarified that although the MCC can inspect and regulate trade licences, any illegal activities detected will be referred to the police for action. Additionally, the Mayor noted that the inspections would extend to homestays in the city, with a focus on verifying building licences issued by the MCC. Operational permissions for homestays, however, fall under the tourism department’s jurisdiction.
The upcoming drive recalls the actions taken in 2017, when then-Mayor Kavitha Sanil led raids that resulted in the cancellation of trade licences for 17 massage parlours and the closure of several unlicensed businesses, including skill game centres.
