Mp Criticizes Fee Hike For Mangalore University's Tulu Pg Programme

Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta has voiced strong opposition to Mangalore University’s steep increase in admission fees for the Tulu PG programme. Initially aimed at promoting the Tulu language, the programme’s fees for the 2024-25 academic year have surged to ₹22,410, up from ₹15,000 just three years ago.

Chowta has urged the government to take immediate steps to reduce the fees, which he believes may discourage students from pursuing a master’s degree in Tulu. In a letter to Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar, he highlighted the financial burden this poses, especially as efforts to secure official language recognition for Tulu are ongoing. Despite previous concessions of ₹4,000, the recent fee hike has been criticized as unfair.

The Tulu PG department requires a minimum of 15 students to continue, and Chowta fears that the increased fees might lead to fewer enrolments. He has called on the university’s vice-chancellor, Prof. PL Dharma, to advocate for a fee reduction.
