NGT Halts Mangaluru Waterfront Project Over Environmental Concerns

Ngt Halts Mangaluru Waterfront Project Over Environmental Concerns

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) to halt its riverfront promenade project. This decision follows a complaint alleging violations of coastal regulation zone rules and threats to the livelihood of hundreds of fishermen. The Bench of Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member Satyagopal Korlapati warned that any unauthorized structures would be removed and costs imposed.

In March, the principal bench of NGT initiated a suo motu case based on media reports and a letter from the National Environment Care Federation. The letter highlighted grievances from fishnet producers and boatyard owners and employees, who were asked to vacate the area for the promenade. It also pointed out the use of heavy machinery in the sensitive coastal regulation zone, prompting the tribunal to form a panel, including a director from the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR).

The Southern Zone Bench expressed disappointment at the state government’s failure to secure a nomination from the NCCR for the panel. They emphasized the need for effective action, directing the District Commissioner to ensure NCCR’s cooperation or face serious consequences for violating the tribunal’s order. The joint committee is required to submit its report by June 24, with the next hearing scheduled for July 3.
