Mangaluru, June 24, 2024: Dr. Sudharam Rai, a distinguished medical professional and community leader, passed away at the age of 80. Born on August 19, 1943, into the renowned Bellipady family, Dr. Rai’s life was marked by significant contributions to both healthcare and community service.
Dr. Rai began his journey with education in Puttur and pursued medical studies at Kasturba Medical College in Manipal/Mangalore. He excelled as a student leader, initiating various movements and serving as the first president of the All College Students Union. His academic prowess extended to sports, where he became Chess Champion and won the Mr. KMC bodybuilding title in 1965.
After starting his career as an Assistant Surgeon at Govt Wenlock Hospital, Mangalore, Dr. Rai devoted himself to rural healthcare in places like Jayapura and Balehonnur. His international journey led him to the United Kingdom during the Emergency period in India, where he made significant contributions to the medical field, including establishing healthcare facilities and educational institutions.
Upon retiring, Dr. Rai returned to Mangalore, establishing the Global Hospital and contributing to community welfare through initiatives like the Lions Mangalore Centennial Club and the Tapasya Foundation. His legacy of service, leadership, and compassion will endure.
