Mangaluru, Jun 28: The connection of rainwater outlets to the underground drainage system (UDS) in Bondel and other parts of Mangaluru has led to overflowing manholes, raising significant health concerns among residents.
Many homeowners and apartment complex builders have linked rainwater outlets to the UDS to prevent waterlogging on their premises. However, this practice has caused drainage water to overflow from manholes, affecting daily commuters and residents in low-lying areas. The overflow often floods homes in these areas, and the underground drainage processing units are overwhelmed by the increased sewage volume, complicating their operations.
The rainy season exacerbates the situation, fostering the growth of mosquitoes and increasing the risk of malaria and dengue. A resident of Mahatma Gandhi Nagar, Bondel, expressed frustration, stating, “Whenever there is heavy rain, the manhole overflows, and the authorities have not taken any steps to resolve this issue. The rainwater drains on both sides of the road are blocked due to plants, leaves, and debris. As a result, the water, which once had a proper exit, now flows directly into nearby houses. The foul smell from the drain water is also causing health issues, and the authorities need to take immediate action.”
Another Bondel resident highlighted the health risks, saying, “The overflowing manhole water floods clogged drains, posing serious health hazards. This area is densely populated, with many school children using this route daily. The authorities must address this problem to prevent mosquito-related issues.”
