Mangaluru: Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harishchandra Berike, attached to the Pandeshwar police station, died while undergoing treatment for severe burn injuries at a hospital on Sunday, January 11, police sources said.

Incident at residence

According to officials, the incident occurred on December 28 at Harishchandra’s residence in Vyasa Nagar near KPT. He reportedly sustained serious burn injuries while burning dry leaves in the compound of his house. In the process, the fire went out of control, resulting in extensive burns.

Family members and neighbours rushed to his aid and immediately shifted him to a private hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. Despite sustained medical treatment for nearly two weeks, Harishchandra succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

Doctors said he had suffered severe burns, which led to complications during the course of treatment. His condition remained critical throughout his hospital stay.

Service career spanning over three decades

Harishchandra Berike was 57 years old and had put in over three decades of service in the Karnataka Police Department. He joined the force in November 1993 and completed nearly 33 years of service, during which he served in various capacities across Dakshina Kannada district.

At the time of the incident, he was serving as an Assistant Sub-Inspector at the Pandeshwar police station. Colleagues described him as a disciplined and soft-spoken officer who was committed to his duties and maintained cordial relations with both the public and fellow staff members.

Senior officers said Harishchandra was known for his sincerity and experience, particularly in handling law and order duties and routine station work. Over the years, he had earned the respect of his peers and juniors alike.

Native place and personal life

Harishchandra was a native of Kavugoli village in Kasaragod district. He had initially been residing in Baikampady after his posting in the coastal region. A few years ago, he built his own house in Vyasa Nagar and settled there with his family.

Sources said he was deeply attached to his family and had been looking forward to retirement, which was approaching in the coming years. His sudden death has left his family members, colleagues and friends in shock.

Condolences from police department

Following his death, several senior police officers and staff from Pandeshwar and neighbouring police stations expressed their condolences. Officers recalled his long and dedicated service to the department and described his passing as a significant loss.

A senior police official said that Harishchandra had served the department with dedication for over three decades and had handled responsibilities with sincerity. “His death is deeply unfortunate. The department has lost an experienced officer,” the official said.

Police sources said departmental formalities related to his death are being completed and assistance will be extended to his family as per rules. Officials are also expected to attend his last rites to pay their respects.

Safety concerns highlighted

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with handling fire, even in routine domestic activities such as burning dry leaves. Fire and safety experts often caution residents against open burning, especially during dry seasons, as flames can quickly spread and cause severe injuries.

Authorities have repeatedly advised citizens to adopt safer waste disposal methods and avoid burning leaves and other materials in residential areas to prevent accidents.

Conclusion

ASI Harishchandra Berike’s death marks the end of a long and dedicated policing career spanning nearly 33 years. Remembered as a committed officer and a responsible individual, his passing has cast a pall of gloom over the police fraternity in the region. As colleagues and family members mourn his loss, his service to the department and the community is being remembered with respect.
