Mangaluru, 15 January 2025: In a landmark medical breakthrough, KMC Hospital, Dr B R Ambedkar Circle, successfully performed a non-surgical Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) device closure on a 4-month-old baby weighing just 4 kgs. Turned away by another hospital due to her low weight and associated challenges, the infant received life-saving treatment thanks to KMC’s expertise.

A high-risk case handled with precision

The infant had been battling recurrent respiratory infections caused by PDA, a condition where an open duct between two major heart vessels leads to abnormal blood flow. Despite the complexities due to the child’s weight, Dr Padmanabha Kamath, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, led the procedure, supported by a skilled team of anesthesiologists and cath lab technicians.

“This case was particularly challenging due to the infant’s low weight, requiring advanced precision and seamless teamwork. The successful closure ensures the child can now grow up healthy and strong,” said Dr Kamath.

The innovative non-surgical PDA closure eliminates the need for open-heart surgery, leveraging advanced medical technology to provide safer and less invasive solutions for young and vulnerable patients.

A testament to advanced care

Saghir Siddiqui, Regional COO of KMC Hospital, emphasized the institution’s commitment to tackling complex medical challenges:
“We are proud to offer state-of-the-art treatments, especially for critical cases. This achievement reflects our team’s adaptability and dedication to providing world-class care.”
