Mangaluru: Dr Shivarama Karantha Pilikula Nisargadhama is set to undergo a major digital transformation with the introduction of a fully paperless ticketing system aimed at improving visitor convenience and streamlining entry procedures across the popular eco-tourism destination.
The new e-ticketing initiative will be officially inaugurated during the visit of Karnataka Minister for Minor Irrigation and Science and Technology, N. S. Boseraju, to Pilikula on Wednesday.
Officials said the upgraded system marks a significant step towards modern tourism management and environmentally sustainable operations at the sprawling tourist destination near Mangaluru.
Visitors to get QR-based digital entry
Speaking about the initiative, Pilikula Development Authority In-charge Commissioner Dr Arun Kumar Shetty said visitors will no longer be required to stand in long queues to purchase physical tickets at the entrance.
Under the new arrangement, self-service kiosks will be installed at entry points, enabling tourists to instantly generate their tickets digitally. Once the ticket is issued, a QR code will be sent directly to the visitor’s mobile phone.
The QR code can then be scanned at various attractions within Pilikula Nisargadhama for seamless access without the need for printed tickets or manual verification.
Authorities believe the system will significantly reduce waiting time at counters and improve the overall visitor experience, especially during weekends and holiday seasons when footfall remains high.
Move aims to reduce paper usage
Officials stated that one of the key objectives of the project is to minimise paper consumption and promote environmentally responsible tourism practices.
The e-ticketing system incorporates digital payment facilities, QR code-based access and self-service features, reducing dependence on conventional paper tickets.
Dr Shetty said the initiative aligns with broader efforts to introduce technology-driven governance and improve operational efficiency at tourism destinations managed by the government.
“With this system, visitors will not have to wait in queues for tickets. The process will become faster, smoother and more efficient,” he said.
Authorities expect the paperless initiative to not only simplify entry procedures but also reduce administrative workload and improve monitoring of visitor flow within the campus.
One cash counter to remain operational
Despite the digital transition, the Pilikula Development Authority has decided to retain one conventional cash counter temporarily to assist visitors who may not yet be familiar with digital or paperless ticketing systems.
Officials said the decision was taken to ensure a smooth transition and avoid inconvenience to elderly visitors or those without access to smartphones and digital payment methods.
The hybrid arrangement will continue until the public gradually adapts to the new technology-based system.
Staff members are also expected to assist visitors during the initial implementation phase to help them understand the QR-based process and kiosk operations.
Online ticket booking to begin soon
Authorities further revealed that an online mobile ticket booking facility is currently under development and is expected to become operational within the next 10 days.
Once launched, tourists will be able to book tickets in advance through their mobile phones before arriving at Pilikula. Officials believe this feature will further enhance convenience and reduce congestion at entry points during peak hours.
The entire digital infrastructure for the project is being developed with the support of Canara Bank.
Officials said the collaboration has enabled the development of a modern, integrated digital ticketing platform suited for large-scale tourism operations.
Pilikula remains major tourism attraction
Managed by the Pilikula Development Authority under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, Pilikula Nisargadhama spans nearly 356 acres and remains one of the most prominent eco-tourism destinations in coastal Karnataka.
The expansive campus includes tropical forest landscapes, the scenic Pilikula Lake and several educational, recreational and cultural attractions.
Major facilities at the destination include the Arboretum, Biological Park, Science Centre, Lake Park with boating facilities, Swami Vivekananda Planetarium, Heritage Village, Artisan Village, Guthu Mane and a Water Amusement Park.
With the introduction of the paperless ticketing system, authorities hope to position Pilikula as a more technologically advanced and visitor-friendly tourism destination while promoting sustainable and eco-conscious practices.
