Environmentalists are preparing to protest after discovering that 16 trees were felled near the Mangaluru Junction railway station. The trees, some over 75 years old, were cut down as part of a parking project. Jeeth Milan Roche, an environmentalist from the Vana Charitable Trust, expressed concerns over the decision, noting that some of these trees had been planted by his group.
The environmentalists are questioning the forest department’s decision to grant permission for the tree cutting, emphasizing the significant environmental impact and advocating for development that preserves greenery. They fear that this “unscientific development” will have adverse effects on Mangaluru’s residents.
A senior forest department official confirmed that a felling order had been issued about three months ago.
