Mangaluru/Udupi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts from June 8 to June 10, warning of extremely heavy rainfall as the southwest monsoon is set to intensify along the Karnataka coast. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm is expected over the next three days, accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds and rough sea conditions.

The weather department has forecast widespread rainfall across coastal Karnataka, with wind speeds over the Arabian Sea likely to reach up to 60 kmph. In view of the deteriorating weather conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until June 10.

Monsoon gains strength along Karnataka coast

The southwest monsoon has become more active over coastal districts, resulting in increased rainfall activity across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. Meteorologists have warned that the coming days could witness intense rainfall spells, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic disruptions and possible damage to infrastructure.

District administrations have been closely monitoring the situation and are expected to take precautionary measures to minimise risks associated with heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The red alert signifies the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall and calls for heightened preparedness among local authorities and residents.

Moderate rain recorded across Dakshina Kannada

Several parts of Dakshina Kannada district experienced moderate rainfall on Sunday as monsoon activity intensified. Areas including Puttur, Sullia, Moodbidri, Bantwal and Beltangady reported steady showers during the day.

Mangaluru witnessed rain during the morning hours, followed by intermittent showers under cloudy skies. Overcast conditions prevailed throughout the day, keeping temperatures below seasonal averages.

According to weather observations, the maximum temperature in Mangaluru was recorded at 28.9°C, which was 2.1°C below normal. The minimum temperature stood at 23.5°C, around 0.3°C below the seasonal average.

The cooler temperatures reflected the increasing influence of monsoon conditions across the coastal belt.

Rain and thunder showers across Udupi district

Udupi district also received moderate rainfall on Sunday, with cloudy skies dominating most parts of the day. The morning began with light drizzle and overcast conditions, while brief sunny intervals were observed during the afternoon.

Thunder accompanied moderate rain in several locations across the district, including Udupi city, Manipal, Parkala, Athradi, Hiriyadka, Alevoor, Kukkikatte, Katapady, Kaup, Hebri, Karkala, Brahmavar, Kundapur and parts of Byndoor taluk.

Light drizzle continued in many places during the evening, indicating sustained moisture activity associated with the advancing monsoon.

Residents reported occasional thunder and short periods of heavy showers, although no major weather-related incidents were reported during the day.

Rainfall data highlights widespread precipitation

The Meteorological Department reported significant rainfall across various parts of Udupi district during the last 24 hours.

Karkala recorded the highest rainfall at 25.8 mm, closely followed by Byndoor with 25.1 mm. Kaup received 22.3 mm of rain, while Brahmavar registered 13.1 mm.

Other rainfall figures included 10.3 mm in Kundapur, 9.6 mm in Udupi and 5.7 mm in Hebri.

The widespread rainfall pattern indicates increasing monsoon activity across the district and supports forecasts of heavier precipitation in the coming days.

Fishermen advised to stay ashore

With rough sea conditions expected to prevail until June 10, authorities have issued a strong advisory to fishermen against venturing into the Arabian Sea.

Strong winds and turbulent waters could pose significant risks to fishing vessels and coastal communities. Officials have urged fishermen and boat operators to follow weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel into the sea during the alert period.

Emergency response teams and local administrations remain on standby to address any weather-related incidents that may arise.

Conclusion

As the southwest monsoon strengthens along Karnataka’s coastline, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall over the next three days. With a red alert in force, residents are advised to remain vigilant, follow official advisories and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during the period of intense weather activity.
