Bantwal: A major tragedy was narrowly averted at Kuntukudelu near Pooralappady in Vitla Padur village after a private school bus carrying more than 15 students crashed into an electricity pole on Tuesday, August 11. All the students escaped unhurt despite the pole falling directly onto the bus.
Bus develops technical fault
The private school bus was reportedly transporting more than 15 students to school when the accident occurred at Kuntukudelu.
According to preliminary information, the bus developed a sudden technical problem while travelling along a downhill stretch of road. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle following the suspected mechanical fault.
The bus then veered off the road and collided with an electricity pole located along the roadside.
The incident took place while the students were inside the vehicle, turning what initially appeared to be a routine school journey into a potentially dangerous situation.
Electricity pole falls on bus
The collision was forceful enough to snap the electricity pole. The pole subsequently fell directly onto the school bus, leaving the vehicle trapped underneath the fallen structure.
The front portion of the bus sustained damage in the impact. The sight of an electricity pole crashing onto a bus carrying schoolchildren caused alarm among people in the surrounding area.
Despite the severity of the accident, the students inside the bus were fortunate to escape without injuries.
The incident could have resulted in serious consequences given the number of children travelling in the vehicle and the fact that the electricity pole came down on top of the bus.
Locals rescue students
Soon after the accident, local residents rushed to the location after learning about the crash. They helped the students safely get out of the bus.
The prompt response from people nearby ensured that the children were brought away from the damaged vehicle without further incident.
The students were reportedly safe and no injuries or casualties were reported following the crash.
The incident therefore ended without loss of life or physical injury, despite the dangerous circumstances.
Safety concerns after accident
The accident has raised concerns about the mechanical condition of school buses and the safety of children travelling in private school vehicles.
A sudden technical fault while negotiating a downhill road can leave a driver with very little time to regain control of a heavy vehicle. In this case, the bus eventually left the road and struck an electricity pole.
The incident also highlights the risks posed by roadside electrical infrastructure, particularly along stretches where school buses and other heavy vehicles regularly travel.
While the children escaped unharmed, the damage to the front portion of the bus and the collapse of the electricity pole demonstrate the force of the collision.
Major tragedy averted
The accident at Kuntukudelu could have had serious consequences, considering that the bus was carrying more than 15 schoolchildren when the driver reportedly lost control.
Fortunately, there were no injuries or casualties. The safe evacuation of the students by local residents further helped prevent the situation from becoming more dangerous.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of school buses, especially vehicles used to transport children on a daily basis. Ensuring that buses are mechanically fit before they begin their routes is essential to reducing the risk of similar accidents.
For now, the students have escaped what could have been a major tragedy. The circumstances leading to the reported technical fault and the condition of the bus are likely to come under scrutiny following the accident.
