Dharmasthala: In a startling claim, Vittal Gowda, uncle of 2012 rape-murder victim Sowjanya, has alleged that he witnessed multiple human remains during the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) spot mahazar at Banglegudde in Dharmasthala, Dakshina Kannada. His statement has brought a fresh dimension to the ongoing probe into suspected mass burials linked to the case.

According to Gowda, SIT officials conducted two separate visits to the forest near the Nethravathi bathing ghat, the same location where complainant ‘mask man’ Chinnayya had earlier claimed to have unearthed a skull that was later produced as evidence in court.

“Saw several skulls and bones”

Recounting his observations, Gowda said he noticed not just one, but multiple skeletal remains. “The first time, three skeletal remains were within ten feet. On the second visit, I could clearly see at least five,” he told reporters.

He also claimed to have seen ritual pots scattered among the bones, and pointed to a mound of freshly dug soil resembling a burial site. “I told the officers I’m ready to show them the exact spots whenever they call, even at midnight,” he said, adding that locals in the area were shocked by what appeared to be numerous burials in a single location.

Dispute over evidence and credibility

The investigation has already been mired in controversy. Chinnayya, the initial complainant who claimed to have found a skull at the site, was arrested for perjury after his version was found inconsistent. He later alleged that Gowda, along with activist Girish Mattanavar and another associate, had brought the skull to the police.

Both Gowda and Mattanavar, however, told the SIT that they had merely acted under Chinnayya’s instructions and had no independent role in producing the evidence.

SIT mahazar without key officials present

On September 6, SIT officers led by SP C.A. Simon summoned Gowda and conducted a mahazar at Banglegudde. However, sources confirmed that key officials, including the Assistant Commissioner, Tahsildar, and forensic team, were not present during the exercise, raising questions about the completeness of the procedure.

Conclusion: Probe takes sensitive turn

The SIT’s investigation into the Sowjanya case has now taken a sensitive turn, with claims of multiple burials at the site adding to public concern. Officials are yet to confirm or deny Gowda’s claims, but the matter has intensified calls for greater transparency and thorough forensic examination of the alleged burial grounds.
