St Ann’s College of Education Goes Co-Ed After 80 Years

Mangaluru: Following in the footsteps of St Agnes College, the city’s historic St Ann’s College of Education will open its doors to male students for its two-year undergraduate teacher-training program starting the next academic year. Established in 1943, the institution has trained over 5,000 women and has long been recognized for its academic excellence.

While St Ann’s has admitted men to its postgraduate and PhD programs for several years, this marks the first time its undergraduate courses will be co-ed. The move follows the lead of St Agnes College, one of India’s first Catholic women’s colleges, which became co-ed three years ago. Sources indicate that St Agnes PU College may also transition to co-ed in the near future.

Sr Dorothy D’Souza, principal of St Ann’s College, confirmed that Mangalore University has approved the co-ed proposal, and the institution awaits final clearance from the Department of Collegiate Education and Centralized Admission Cell.

Explaining the decision, Sr D’Souza said, “Every institution is moving towards co-education, reflecting societal needs. There is significant demand from male students seeking quality education, which our college is known for.”

The college, which aims to empower women through education, will continue its legacy of inclusivity while maintaining its high standards. With an annual intake of 50 students, St Ann’s has consistently filled its seats and has awarded 45 PhD degrees since launching its doctoral programs in 2007-08.
