St. Joseph Engineering College Organizes Fire Fighting Training Program

Mangaluru: The Department of Human Resources at St. Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), in association with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, proudly organized a Fire Fighting Training Program for SJEC teaching and non-teaching staff. The program took place at Fr. Fred Memorial Hall, Academic Block I, on 20 July 2024 and 03 August 2024 in two separate batches.

The event commenced at 9:30 AM with an inauguration ceremony, followed by a series of training sessions. Mr. Mahmed Zulfikar Nawaz K.P., District Fire Officer (Fire Prevention) from Karnataka State Fire & Emergency Services, Mangalore, was the Chief Guest. In his session, he highlighted the critical importance of firefighting training, emphasizing how it can save lives and prevent property damage. Mr. Nawaz showcased major tragic fire accidents in different cities that resulted in significant loss due to a lack of fire safety knowledge.

Dr. John E. D’Silva, Chief Administrative Officer of SJEC, graced the occasion as Guest of Honour and shared insights into the necessity of such training. The program was coordinated by Dr. Shreeranga Bhat, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, who welcomed the gathering. Mr. Rakesh T. Lobo, HR Manager at SJEC, addressed the participants, explaining the significance of the training.

The comprehensive training program included theoretical sessions on understanding various classes of fire, the fire triangle, types of fire extinguishers, and evacuation methods. The sessions concluded with a demonstration of how to use different fire extinguishers effectively.

Training sessions were delivered by Mr. Praveen, Fire Officer from Pandeshwar, and Mr. Venkatesh, Fire Officer from Belthangady. They shared their expertise on handling fire emergencies using various resources available on-site. The program saw the participation of 150 registered staff members who are now certified as firefighters.

The training aimed to enhance fire safety knowledge and preparedness among participants, contributing significantly to campus safety and emergency readiness. The event underscored SJEC’s commitment to fostering a safe and well-prepared community. Mr. Rajesh Belchada, Convener of the program, delivered the Vote of Thanks.
