Belthangady: The mysterious death of a 15-year-old boy while on his way to a temple has taken a serious turn, with police deciding to treat the case as murder following findings from the post-mortem examination. The post-mortem of Sumant, a resident of Odilnal village in Sambolya, was conducted at Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru on January 15, 2026, and revealed multiple injuries to the head, raising strong suspicion of foul play.

According to preliminary findings from the post-mortem report, the boy had suffered three strong blows to the head. Medical experts have indicated that the injuries appear to have been caused by a sharp or heavy object, possibly a knife or a similar weapon. These findings prompted the police to reclassify the case, which was initially registered as an unnatural death, as a murder case to enable a deeper and more rigorous investigation.

Head injuries raise suspicion of foul play

Police sources said the nature and severity of the head injuries could not be explained by an accidental fall alone. While it is suspected that Sumant may have fallen into a ditch after sustaining the head injuries, investigators believe the injuries themselves were inflicted before the fall.

The post-mortem examination also revealed the presence of water in the boy’s lungs, suggesting that he may have drowned after falling into the ditch. However, officials said drowning alone could not account for the three distinct and forceful head injuries identified during the autopsy.

Doctors conducting the post-mortem reportedly found no clear accidental cause that could explain the pattern of injuries. This lack of clarity has strengthened the suspicion that the boy was attacked before he fell, possibly when he was in a semi-conscious state.

Case converted to murder for detailed probe

In view of the medical findings, police officials said the case has now been officially treated as a murder. “There is no satisfactory explanation at this stage for the head injuries. To ensure a fair and comprehensive investigation, we have decided to investigate the case as a murder,” a senior police officer said.

By converting the case, police will be able to invoke relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and use broader investigative powers, including detailed questioning, forensic analysis and examination of possible suspects.

Four special teams formed

To expedite the investigation, police have constituted four special teams under the leadership of the Belthangady Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). Each team has been assigned specific responsibilities, including examining the crime scene, tracking the boy’s last movements, questioning witnesses and analysing forensic evidence.

One team is focusing on reconstructing the sequence of events leading up to Sumant’s death, including his route to the temple and any interactions he may have had along the way. Another team is collecting technical and forensic evidence, while the remaining teams are tasked with local intelligence gathering and background checks.

Police said CCTV footage from nearby areas, if available, will be examined, and mobile phone data and call records of relevant individuals may also be analysed as part of the investigation.

Family and local community seek answers

The death of the teenager has shocked residents of Odilnal village and surrounding areas. Family members and locals have demanded a transparent and speedy investigation to identify those responsible and ensure justice.

Sumant was described by neighbours as a quiet and well-behaved student. His sudden death under mysterious circumstances has triggered concern and anxiety in the region, with many calling for stronger measures to ensure the safety of children and teenagers.

Police assure thorough investigation

Police officials have assured the family and the public that no angle will be ruled out at this stage. They said statements from family members, friends and people who may have seen the boy on the day of the incident are being recorded.

“We are approaching the case with utmost seriousness. All scientific and legal procedures will be followed to uncover the truth,” an officer said, adding that further clarity would emerge once the detailed post-mortem report and forensic analysis are completed.

Awaiting further findings

Investigators said the exact cause of death and the sequence of events would become clearer once all forensic reports are received and witness statements are corroborated. Police have appealed to the public to share any information that could assist in the investigation.

The case continues to be under close watch, with senior officers monitoring the progress of the probe.
