Mangaluru: In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns over security, thieves reportedly broke into police quarters located within the Mangaluru Police Lines, adjacent to the Town Hall, and decamped with valuables. The burglary, which occurred when the occupant was away on leave, has triggered anxiety among residents of the police quarters and prompted calls for tighter security arrangements in the area.
Burglary reported while occupant was on leave
The incident came to light after Samarth, an employee working at the Dakshina Kannada district police control room and residing in the A1 block of the police lines, was informed about the break-in. Samarth had gone to his native place on leave, leaving his house locked.
According to preliminary information, the theft took place soon after neighbouring residents stepped out of their homes. Taking advantage of the empty house, the miscreants allegedly broke open the door and gained entry into the quarters.
Once inside, the thieves are said to have ransacked the house and forced open a Godrej cupboard, from which several valuables were stolen. The exact details regarding the nature and value of the stolen items are yet to be officially disclosed by the police.
Police inspect the spot
After the incident was reported, police personnel contacted the complainant and visited the spot to conduct an inspection. Officials examined the house and surrounding areas to assess the manner of the break-in and collect preliminary evidence.
Interestingly, it is learnt that no visible external damage was found at the spot apart from the forced opening of the door and cupboard. This has raised questions about how easily the thieves were able to access the quarters located within a police-controlled area.
Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) 1 and personnel from the Crime Branch of the South Police Station were present during the inspection. They reportedly briefed the complainant on the next course of action and initiated steps to register a formal complaint and pursue further investigation.
Security lapses at police lines alleged
The incident has brought to the fore alleged security lapses at the Mangaluru Police Lines. Local residents and occupants of the police quarters pointed out that all three gates of the police lines remain open, allowing unrestricted movement of people at most times of the day.
Residents claimed that individuals from neighbouring Kerala are frequently seen entering and exiting the police lines, raising concerns about unauthorised access. While there is no confirmation that outsiders were involved in this particular incident, the lack of strict monitoring has become a major cause of worry.
Several residents expressed surprise and concern that a burglary could take place within police quarters, which are generally considered secure due to the presence of police personnel and official infrastructure.
Residents demand tighter security
Following the incident, residents of the police lines have urged the department to pay greater attention to security measures. They have called for stricter gate control, verification of visitors, installation of additional CCTV cameras, and regular patrolling within the premises.
According to residents, timely intervention and improved surveillance could prevent similar incidents in the future. They warned that continued negligence might lead to more serious crimes, posing risks not only to property but also to the safety of families living within the police quarters.
Some residents also suggested the deployment of dedicated security staff at entry and exit points, especially during night hours, to ensure that only authorised persons are allowed inside.
Police assure action
Police officials said that the matter is being taken seriously and that necessary steps will be initiated after completing the preliminary investigation. They stated that efforts are underway to trace the culprits and recover the stolen valuables.
Officials also indicated that security arrangements at the police lines would be reviewed, and appropriate measures would be taken to address any shortcomings. They urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements immediately.
Incident raises broader concerns
The burglary has sparked a wider debate on safety within government residential complexes, particularly those meant for police personnel. If such incidents can occur within police quarters, residents fear that the situation in other residential areas could be even more vulnerable.
The incident has also highlighted the importance of coordinated security planning, especially in high-density residential zones with official significance.
Conclusion
The theft at the Mangaluru Police Lines serves as a wake-up call for authorities to reassess and strengthen security mechanisms within police residential areas. While the investigation is ongoing, residents hope that concrete steps will be taken to ensure that such incidents are not repeated, restoring confidence among those living within the police quarters.
