Mangaluru (Karnataka): The Mangaluru City Police have announced temporary traffic diversions and one-way restrictions along key stretches between Pumpwell Circle and Kankanady Bypass to facilitate the ongoing road development works.
According to the police notification, during the first and second phases of construction, one side of the two-way road from Karavali Junction to Pumpwell has been converted into a one-way route to allow for uninterrupted roadwork and smooth vehicular movement.
Additionally, the road from Pumpwell via Kankanady Old Road to Kankanady Junction has also been made a one-way road for the duration of the project. Authorities have emphasised that parking of all types of vehicles on both sides of these one-way routes is strictly prohibited, and violators will face penalties.
Route changes and movement restrictions
As per the revised traffic plan:
- Vehicles coming from Padil and Thokkottu towards Pumpwell Circle and heading toward Karavali Junction must travel via Kankanady Old Road to Kankanady Junction, and then take a right turn toward Karavali Junction.
- Conversely, vehicles coming from Falnir Road and Valencia Road towards Pumpwell should proceed straight to Karavali Junction from Kankanady Junction, and then turn right to reach Pumpwell Circle, following the route prescribed by the City Police Commissioner.
These diversions are expected to ease congestion and ensure the safety of commuters and construction workers while road improvement activities are underway.
Public advisory and police appeal
The Mangaluru City Police have urged all motorists to cooperate with the traffic regulations and use the designated detour routes. Additional police personnel and traffic wardens have been deployed at major junctions to guide commuters and manage traffic flow during peak hours.
Authorities have also appealed to residents and business owners in the vicinity to avoid roadside parking and plan travel timings accordingly, particularly during morning and evening rush hours.
Officials clarified that the traffic diversions are temporary and will remain in effect until the completion of the road development phases. Commuters have been advised to follow updates issued by the police through official social media channels and local news outlets.
Road development under progress
The Pumpwell–Kankanady corridor is one of Mangaluru’s busiest arterial routes, connecting southern city suburbs with commercial hubs. The development work aims to improve road quality, drainage systems, and pedestrian safety along this stretch.
City engineers have indicated that the current phase includes asphalt relaying, widening, and surface strengthening, after which the two-way traffic flow will be restored.
Conclusion
The temporary diversions mark another step in Mangaluru’s ongoing urban road improvement efforts. While the changes may cause short-term inconvenience to motorists, authorities have assured that the upgraded road infrastructure will provide long-term relief from congestion and improve traffic safety in the area.
