Mangaluru: In an effort to improve road safety and curb traffic violations, the Dakshina Kannada Police have launched the first phase of an advanced traffic surveillance system by installing cameras at key locations across the district police jurisdiction. The surveillance cameras, which became operational on Thursday, are expected to help police identify traffic offenders, reduce accidents and strengthen enforcement of road safety regulations.
The initiative has been implemented as part of the district police’s efforts to address the increasing number of road accidents caused by violations such as overspeeding, dangerous driving, failure to wear helmets, not using seat belts and other breaches of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Cameras installed at key locations
In the first phase, surveillance cameras have been installed at strategic locations falling under the jurisdiction of the Vittal, Uppinangady, Sullia and Bantwal Rural police stations. These areas witness significant vehicular movement every day and have been identified as important points for traffic monitoring.
According to an official release, the cameras officially commenced operations on Thursday, July 23. The system is expected to provide continuous monitoring of vehicles moving through these locations and enable the police to detect traffic offences more efficiently.
The installation of the cameras marks the beginning of a technology-driven approach to traffic enforcement in the district, reducing dependence on manual checks while ensuring greater compliance with traffic rules.
Violations to be monitored electronically
The newly installed surveillance cameras are capable of monitoring vehicles round the clock and recording instances of traffic violations. The footage captured by the cameras will be used by police personnel to verify offences before initiating action against violators.
Once a violation is confirmed, official notices will be issued directly to the registered owners of the vehicles concerned. The notices will inform vehicle owners about the nature of the offence and the applicable penalties under the law.
Police officials have advised motorists to strictly follow traffic regulations, as violations captured by the surveillance system will attract legal action even if offenders are not stopped on the spot.
