Mangaluru: Mangaluru police have arrested two persons in connection with the alleged robbery of a 76-year-old woman at her residence in Konaje, cracking the case within three days of the incident.
Woman assaulted during daytime robbery
According to Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH, the incident occurred at around 1.15 pm on August 3, when the elderly woman was alone at home.
She reportedly heard someone knocking on the door and opened it to find two men near the staircase. The accused allegedly told her that they were looking for a house to rent before forcibly pushing open the door and entering the residence.
Police said the men allegedly knocked the woman down and assaulted her before forcibly taking away her gold chain and bangle.
The stolen jewellery weighed around 24 grams and was valued at approximately Rs. 3 lakh.
A case was registered at Konaje Police Station under Sections 332, 309(6) read with 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Special team cracks case in three days
Following the complaint, a special police team was formed to trace the accused. Acting on information gathered during the investigation, the team detained two suspects at Maroli on Friday.
The arrested persons have been identified as Bala Subramanya, 49, of Matadakani, Urwa, Mangaluru, and Shyam Kumar, 33, of Bokkapatna. Shyam Kumar is an autorickshaw owner.
Police have recovered the gold jewellery allegedly stolen from the woman and seized the motorcycle reportedly used in the crime.
Accused has previous cases
According to the Commissioner, Bala Subramanya has several previous cases registered against him, including robbery cases at Bajpe, Mulki, Mangaluru East and Mangaluru Rural police stations, besides a theft case at Mangaluru North Police Station.
The accused will be produced before the court.
The operation was conducted under the leadership of Mangaluru South Sub-Division ACP Vijaya Kranti.
The Commissioner has advised elderly and lone residents to exercise caution when unknown persons approach their homes.
