Bantwal: The Vittal police have cracked a series of lorry battery thefts by arresting two men from neighbouring Kasaragod district and recovering 10 stolen lorry batteries from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Abdul Shameer P. A. (50), a resident of Charkala in Kasaragod, and Abdul Majid (33), a resident of Muttathody in Kasaragod.

According to the police, the arrests were made following a detailed investigation into multiple thefts reported within the jurisdiction of the Vittal Police Station.

Batteries stolen from parked lorries

Police said the thefts involved batteries being stolen from lorries that were parked overnight at different locations within the Vittal police limits.

Following complaints from vehicle owners, the police registered multiple cases and launched an investigation to identify those involved.

The cases were registered under Crime Nos. 38/2025, 39/2026, 41/2026, 123/2026 and 126/2026.

Investigators examined evidence and gathered intelligence that eventually led them to the two accused.

Ten stolen batteries recovered

During the course of the investigation, police recovered 10 stolen lorry batteries believed to have been taken from the vehicles involved in the registered cases.

The recovery is expected to assist the police in linking the stolen property to the respective complainants and strengthening the cases against the accused.

Officials are also examining whether the two men were involved in similar thefts reported in nearby police station limits.

Accused remanded to judicial custody

After completing the initial investigation and recovery process, the accused were produced before the jurisdictional court.

The court remanded both men to judicial custody.

Police said further investigation is underway to determine whether the duo had any accomplices or links to other vehicle battery thefts in the region.

The successful detection of the cases is expected to provide relief to transport operators and lorry owners, who had been affected by repeated battery thefts in the Vittal area.
