The illegal dumping of waste along roadsides has become a critical environmental and public health issue, exacerbated by insufficient enforcement and public apathy. Items such as plastics, tires, and household waste not only mar the landscape but also clog drainage systems, causing flooding and fostering the spread of diseases.

The Valencia-Gorigudda stretch in Mangaluru is a glaring example, with roadside litter including plastic waste and alcohol bottles. Despite the installation of CCTV cameras and warning signboards by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), the problem persists due to poorly maintained cameras and ineffective enforcement of fines. Public indifference to MCC’s efforts further aggravates the situation.

Additionally, the stretch has suffered from years of road maintenance neglect, worsening the area’s condition and affecting residents’ quality of life.

A holistic approach is essential to tackle these issues effectively. This includes ensuring the proper maintenance of CCTV cameras for real-time monitoring, enforcing fines rigorously to deter offenders, and conducting regular road repairs to improve infrastructure. Enhanced waste disposal facilities and intensified public awareness campaigns on environmental responsibility can further help address the problem.

Stronger action and community involvement are crucial to restore the environment and safeguard public health in the Valencia-Gorigudda area.
