VHP Leaders Face Charges for Provocative Speeches in Bantwala, Tensions Rise

Vhp

Bantwala: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders Sharan Pumpwell, South Karnataka Provincial Co-ordinator, and Bharat Kumdelu, are facing charges for allegedly delivering provocative speeches during the ‘BC Road Chalo’ protest on Monday. The city police registered a case under Sections 196(1) and 352 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on Tuesday.

According to the police, a complaint was filed by Muhammad Rafeeq, alleging that the speeches made by Sharan Pumpwell and Bharat Kumdelu during the protest harmed the dignity and sentiments of the Muslim community. The complaint specifically mentions Sharan’s remarks, where he allegedly stated that Muslims would not be allowed to conduct Eid processions if Hindus decided to retaliate.

This controversy follows an earlier voice recording from former Bantwal Municipality Chairman Muhammad Sharif and Municipal Member Hasinar, challenging Hindus to “come to the road” if they had the strength. In response, former BJP Balthila Mahashakti Kendra President Yashodhar Karbettu released a counter voice recording, which was seen as derogatory towards Muslims.

A separate complaint was subsequently filed against Yashodhar Karbettu by Mohammad Sarfaraz Nawaz of Bantwal, leading to a case under IPC Sections 192 and 352.

In light of the escalating tensions, the Bantwal Municipality has imposed a temporary ban on the sale of liquor as a precaution. Additional police forces have been deployed in sensitive areas to maintain law and order.

Dakshina Kannada MP C. Brijesh Chowta has demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of former Municipality President Muhammad Sharif and Member Hasinar for their provocative statements.

This incident underscores the growing communal tensions in the region, with authorities working to prevent further escalation. Investigations into the complaints are ongoing, and further actions are expected in the coming days.
