Government pre-university (PU) colleges in Dakshina Kannada facing classroom shortages are set to receive much-needed relief by December. Under the Viveka Scheme, 67 new classrooms have been allocated across the district, with 26 projects completed and ready for inauguration.
One notable beneficiary is the Nalyapadavu PU College in Shaktinagar, Mangaluru, which was relocated from Mysuru in 2021. Lacking classrooms since its inception, the college now has nine new classrooms, with around 90% of the construction completed. “Limited classroom space prevented us from increasing admissions, but the new infrastructure will allow us to accommodate more students,” said Jayanand N. Suvarna, president of the Dakshina Kannada Pre-University Colleges Principals’ Association.
An official coordinating the Viveka Scheme confirmed that 26 classrooms, including eight at Nalyapadavu, have been completed, while others are in progress. However, the tender process for Balmatta PU College is delayed due to technical issues.
Many classrooms were finished months ago but could not be inaugurated earlier due to the model code of conduct. Officials now plan to inaugurate them next month. Most newly constructed classrooms are in rural areas, addressing significant infrastructure gaps in those regions.
CD Jayanna, Deputy Director of Pre-University Education (DDPU), stated that college principals have been instructed to inaugurate the classrooms after consulting local MLAs.
