Yenepoya NSS Unit Revamps Facilities at Bantwal School

Mangaluru: The NSS unit of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) addressed a long-standing need for improved washroom facilities and a retaining wall at Kumdelu Government Higher Primary School in Bantwal taluk. Years of deteriorating infrastructure led the School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) to appeal repeatedly for renovations, with limited success.

Taking the initiative as part of their community outreach programme, NSS volunteers from the university’s physiotherapy department constructed new washrooms and rebuilt the collapsed retaining wall. Assisted by local laborers, the team completed the project within a week.

Dr. Ashwini Shetty, NSS programme coordinator, shared that the school falls under their village adoption programme. “This school was chosen randomly, but we soon realized its urgent needs, such as separate washrooms for boys and girls and the reconstruction of the retaining wall damaged during recent rains. Despite years of efforts to secure funding, no progress was made,” she said.

Guided by NSS officers Shifali and Swathi and supported by Yenepoya Physiotherapy College principal Loudraj, 50 students, including 20 girls, worked on the project. The initiative, costing around Rs 80,000, was supported by community contributions. Dinesh Shetty donated 15 bags of cement, engineer Anantha Kottari arranged two masons, and gram panchayat member Manoj provided food and refreshments.

The local community has applauded the NSS unit’s efforts for improving the school’s infrastructure and providing essential facilities for students.
