Bantwal: A young woman was allegedly hacked to death in broad daylight at the KSRTC bus stand in Bantwal on Thursday, triggering panic among commuters and prompting police to launch a massive search for the absconding accused.

The deceased has been identified as Lavanya, a resident of Kakyapada. According to preliminary information, she was employed at a private nursing home in Kalladka.

Police have registered a murder case and initiated an investigation to ascertain the motive behind the crime. The accused, who allegedly fled immediately after the attack, remains at large.

Woman allegedly attacked after getting off bus

According to preliminary information, Lavanya had boarded a KSRTC bus bound for Kakyapada from the Bantwal bus stand.

Before the incident, she reportedly telephoned one of her relatives and informed them that a young man was sitting next to her inside the bus. The call was allegedly disconnected shortly afterwards.

Based on the preliminary statements of passengers, both Lavanya and the suspected assailant later got down from the bus at the Bantwal KSRTC bus stand.

Witnesses told police that the man allegedly began chasing the woman soon after they alighted from the bus.

When the accused allegedly pulled out a sharp weapon from his bag, Lavanya reportedly attempted to run to safety.

However, the attacker allegedly caught up with her and assaulted her repeatedly with the weapon, inflicting fatal injuries before fleeing the scene.
